Is there really any follow-up procedure that an applicant should initiate with a school following an interview? I know that a thank-you letter should be sent, but other than that doesn't said school have all they need to make a decision? Or is there anything else an applicant should do to better his/her chances?

Other than thank you letters postmarked the day after than the interview (printed on nice stationary and signed), I will call on December 1st to check for acceptance status. If you haven't graduated yet, maintain your Fall grades, because many schools won't give acceptance until they see them.

I have never even heard about a thank you letter. Is that really something that we should be doing? I imagine that they are having enough to deal with that they wouldn't care about a thank you letter.

It makes you look much more professional if you write thank you letters. After your interview, make sure to ask the secretary for the names of your interviewers and their titles for your thank you letters.

To everyone his/her own....I have heard so many back and forth conversations about thank you letters. I know certain Canadian schools have specifically asked not to send such letters at any time, as there is enough paper work to go through and the interviewers opinion should not have any bias from anything that occurs after the said date of the interview. But then again, if you feel like sending one send one....if you don't, then don't sweat it.

Thank you letters sound like such a bad idea. They have hundreds if not over a thousand applications and sending a followup letter a day later to suck up just seems annoying and insincere.

Yep. I never bothered with sending them. Hell, I was so nervous that I forgot who I interviewed with.
