After you receive your match day results in late March, do you still have to go on rotations, or can you stop right then and there? And if you can stop then, do you get the next 2 or 3 months as vacation time (since residency usually starts in June/July)?

If you didn't use up your vacation months for interviews and step 2 studying, you might be able to wrap things up a month or so early. In most cases you will still have requirements to complete before you can graduate, perhaps a sub-I, maybe step 2 etc

You have to finish your school's requirements. At my school, if you take absolutely no vacation it's possible to do that on March 1, but if you used all you vacation you'll be ther through the end of April.

Is taking no vacation feasible with residency interviews and Step 2 studying, and if not, would it be reasonable to only take a month for those two?

Depends on your school's schedule. At my school we have 7 months of electives, and it's pretty easy to schedule a month or two that gives you a huge amount of time to study for step 2 (radiology) or travel for interviews (reserach). On the other hand if you only have a couple of months of electives chances are you're going to end up doing something serious with them like rotating at your ideal residency site, so you're really going to need your vacation for the other stuff.

That being said I think using just one month might be more feasible than using none. Also I'm not really sure I would want 4 months away from medicine before starting Intern year, any more than I would want 2 years without using vacation time. I mean, we finish on May 1, that's already 6 weeks off between med school and Intern year.

We graduate the last weekend in May, so there's really no time for post-grad vacation. I'm doing easy electives during interview/Step 2 studying though, so I'll have basically 3+ months totally free for vacation in between 4th year electives. woot. 👍

Wait... does intern year start June 1st or July 1st? I thought it was July, but that's years away for me. 😕

I just wanted to take my kids to Disney World before I disappear into the bowels of the hospital for a year.

July 1st, but orientation usually starts mid-June. So theoretically there are two weeks in between could be used as vacation.. unfortunately since my lease is up end of May, I'll have to move out right after graduation. The process of moving across the country, settling in a new place, etc will take some time. You can def go to Disney after med school grad, but theres probably not enough time for a 3wk backpacking trip to some far away enchanting land..

Ah, gotcha. Thank you. For the last few years my school has graduated in mid-May and as of right now, I'm planning/hoping to stay local for residency and practice and not moving from the house my husband and I bought a few months ago until we're ready to buy our "forever" house.

I finished all of my 4th year requirements in the middle of March and spent the next two months traveling overseas. I returned a few days before my med school graduation. Very relaxing and fun and a great way to recharge my batteries before residency begins.
