After we've been matched somewhere- and I wish us all the best! What's the protocol for thank youing and stuff. Thank you notes again? Small presents? To all the faculty this time, or just the guys who interviewed you?How do you accept the job politely?

Case of Heineken for everyone who wrote me a letter of recommendation. Well...maybe a box of wine for the ladies who wrote me a letter of rec.

No thank-yous necessary. Just wait for all the paperwork to roll in. (For all you know, you may have been at the bottom of their list. 😉 )

This is what I did. I had already thanked everyone anyway. Thanking them again would have been overkill IMO. And, "you may have been at the bottom of their list," and they might not be quite as happy as you.

Yes, I would thank your letter writers in some way. But, you should've done that by now. 😀

I would do the following:

1. Thank the people who wrote your letters of recommendation again. Inform them where you matched.

2. A brief thank you letter to the program director is certainly appropriate.

You just matched into a fairly rigorous apprenticeship where you will be working for peanuts. There is only so much thanks to give.

Is anyone planning to give small gifts such as a nice pen to letter of rec writers after the match? Or rotten fish heads if you match at #17?

Don't give the pen - you know they'll lose it! If you're talkig Mont Blanc here, thats big bucks - 🙂

Gifts would not be appropriate. Thank them sincerely and let them know you have been fortunate enough to match at a program you desired.

Gifts would not be appropriate. Thank them sincerely and let them know you have been fortunate enough to match at a desirable program. That they contributed to your success will please them, after all, they went into academics so that they could be important and influential.

Just email your PD-to-be expressing your enthusiasm for the program, etc. Also update your letter-writers of the outcome and thank them again - email would suffice. I think gifts are overkill, though I've seen friends/classmates do it.
