Hey,

I'm a premed so still in college, but am interested in learning more about what happens post-residency. Ideally I'd like to practice in a large metropolitan area (lots of diversity, hopefully would get to treat a lot of different people) but it seems to me that practicing there would be more competitive. all other things being equal, do MD's in general have a lot of mobility in terms of choosing where they want to/where they get to practice? How much does the residency factor into where you end up practicing - i.e. if one does a residency in a small area in the Midwest, would that be an obstacle to practicing in San Francisco, Miami, or NYC? How much does the med school attended factor in? Thanks!

While people do tend to stay in the area they did residency in, there is no reason why you should be geographically limited to such. As an example, my SO went to medical school in the Midwest, residency in PA, fellowship in another Mid Atlantic state and will be an attending out west after interviewing at several places around the country. If you have the goods to offer, geography won't be a signficant factor limiting your practice destination.
