Hey

for those of you who are willing to, can you post your ec activites/ volunteer work and where you were accepted/ waitlisted?


This would be great help for those of us who are going to apply to dental schools.
 
-Job-shadowed general dentist for 33 hrs
-Job-shadowed/volunteered with a oral surgeon in Nicaragua for 72 hrs
-ASDA/MOHC dental assisting program for 16 hrs
-USNDA treasurer
-One full year of research
-participated in PULSE for 80 hrs
-Nurse Aide training for 108 hrs
-Volunteered at nursing home for 312 hrs

Interviewed at Tufts and Temple and was accepted to both. Good luck to all of you!🙂
 
Have you tried predents.com? or you're looking for something that's more specific.

In that case let me post mine:

*Roughly 1200+ shadowing hours at 5 different general dentists' offices in 3 years.

*Vice President of the Pre-Dental Club

*Marketing Director and Clinic Director of the Preventive Dentistry program at my undergrad.
Roughly about 1000 hours in all the activities we did in the Pre-Dental Organization; Schools tours, officer meetings, volunteering activities, speaker presentations .etc

*Anatomy T.A/tutor

*Member of the Pre-Physical Therapy Society for 2 years

*Chairs of the Volunteer Committee for the AED Pre-Professional Health Honors Society.

*Intramural basketball, flag football, and dodgeball involvement for 4 years.

*High school basketball for 3 years: Not that really matters by the time I applied to dental schools but I put it on my application anyway.

*X-Ray certified

*UNLV Sim lab course

*Quadrant denture workshop

Interviewed at UCSF, UOP, Pittsburgh, NYU, and Kentucky.

Got into UOP, UK, and still waiting to hear back from UCSF. Didn't go to my Pitts and NYU interview since they're post Dec.

Not a single one 😳... I did, however, catch like twelve innocent people that had absolutely nothing to do with the crime of interest.

i have been fined so many times it's not even funny..

Kind of strange...

Bottom line with ECAs, do what you're passionate about. It is not necessarily about what you do, or how much you do, but rather what you do when you are there. If it is something you are genuinely interested in you will become more involved and thus you will get more out of the activity in regards to personal growth. I would not necessarily fall into the trap of one ECA looking better than others, or by adding more BS activities thinking you are making yourself a better candidate.

As far as shadowing...just do it. It behooves you to do so. Not only does it expose you to the career field, but it also demonstrates the decision to become a dentist is yours alone - not your parents', not your advisors', not your professors', etc. Every applicant will have shadow time on their app.
