Postbacc research that doesn't require previous experience? Does such a thing exist?

Hi all,

I am writing with what I realize may be a very impossible request. I am a senior in college planning to take a gap year or two before medical school. I have been unable to get into a research lab during my undergraduate years because I have to work part-time, however I do have an interest in research, particularly clinical research.

Although I lack formal research experience, I have experience working closely with patients through a summer job at a nursing home and volunteering. I am a neuroscience major and have taken all of the pre-med requirements, so I have some familiarity with various lab techniques.

Are there any postbacc research programs that might accept me despite having no formal research experience? I'm considering the NIH Postbacc IRTA program, but it appears that the strongest applications are those with prior research experience.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

If you're proficient with data analysis and have performed well in science lab courses, write up a strong cover letter emphasizing how your skills and experiences etc perfect for the job. Worst case, email some PI's and volunteer to do research. Don't twiddle your thumbs at home all day (or play xbox, like I did)
