Postponing Step I and doing it during Rotations?

I was wondering what the prevailing opinion is about doing Step I during the first part of 3rd year. I'm a DO student and signed up for both. My USLME is in 2.5 weeks and COMLEX in 3.2. While I feel I might be able to pass the COMLEX, I don't feel like I will get the score I want (220-ish)for USLME in 2.5 weeks.

Rather than throw away the $560 I spent on that exam, it was suggested to me to postpone USLME until I'm ready,possibly 3rd year in July. By then I'd be about 3-4 weeks into my peds rotation.

I know I don't have to take USLME but I wanted to give myself a chance at keeping options open.

it will be pretty hard to study for step 1 during your rotations. try to get it done before you start, if possible

If you're only feeling like you "might be able to pass" the COMLEX, it's doubtful you'll pass the USMLE. For a 220, unless you're getting 210+ on an NBME 1 week out, I wouldn't even consider take the test. For your actual question, if your peds is outpatient or known to be a very easy (ie, short hours) rotation, you may have time to study for the USMLE during it. But keep in mind you also have to read for your peds rotation and study for your peds shelf exam. Preparing to take the USMLE step 1 will be really challenging during rotations unless you're already a baller and a pro at time management.
