I am not doing as well in Practice of Medicine course as I am in other courses such as Biochem, Anatomy, etc. Apparently, I am way below average in biomedical ethics. I can't help but feeling down about it, especially since I did my best in that class - participated in every small session, put in a lot of time into my paper, studied for exams. Excluding the objective nature of the exam component, maybe the instructors of my small group just didn't like me? I am bummed. 🙁 How important are your grades in such courses in terms of being competitive for residencies? Does doing poorly in them limit your options? I would appreciate any feedback on this. Thank you.

who cares just pass the mother and make jokes the whole time. These are so dumb-in the wise words of one of my professors when expressing his dislike for these type of courses and how they are conducted-"If you are an a$$hole when you got here you're gonna be an a$$hole when you leave." Just pass these, god they are so mind numbingly dumb and canned. WHy even worry about it. They are in the curriculum for the schools benefit not yours, so do the bare minimum and focus on stuff that will matter to you. Plus if you do community work of any kind-volunteering, tutoring or bigbros/big sis- then what can anyone say to you-you lack compassion and concern for your fellow man?

GOd I wish I didn't even have to pass this crap, and didnt live in fear of the profesionalism boogeyman, I would pull some stunts but I have too much to lose.

side note-I am not talking about clinical skills test like how to take history, vitals-stuff like that is important and I do take seriously.

Step 1, class rank, clinical evaluations, etc. That is what gets you a residency. Check out Iserson's. Individual classes, unless they translate directly to your specialty (i.e. Path for Pathology residents), are almost never considered in your app.

DrKitty,

I have a sneaking suspicion there were some small-group professors that didn't like anyone -- Especially if the student didn't blindly agree with the feel-good babble the small group teachers were spouting. I gave one of my profs a poor feedback. I wrote that if I wanted to be politically indoctrinated, I would have gone to law school. 🙄

Now that we are into the clinical portion, you can get the grade up, as it is less subjective. If you need someone to practice taking the history from, I can help you out.

BTW, I now know who you are. 👍 I figured it out because I've only spoken to 2 other classmates about SDN, and I know who they both are on here.

Now get back to that Brain and Behavior! LOL

Thank you everybody for your advice and support. I guess I should move on and focus on the courses I am presently taking, including the clinical skills. The way the whole ELSIM component and the grading was set up makes me sick, and the thing is - if I had a chance to do it over again (not that I would want to), I wouldn't have done anything differently, I did the best I could. I scheduled an appointment with the course administrator to go over the written evaluation my small-group instructors gave me, this should be interesting.

And racerx, next time I see you in class, I'll say hi - and you'll confirm whether it is me who you think I am 🙂 I believe we talked about SDN at some point in the past.

This happened last year, too. Just realize, now that you're in the CS portion of the course, things'll get better.

These professionalism classes are bull. Your performance in them in no way correlates to how you will on the wards or how professional you are. Furthermore, residency programs don't care about first and second year unless you absolutely failed or are in the top 10% of your class -- even then it counts for only a little bit. My advice is to relax, enjoy your time, and work hard during third year.

Ya I failed and had to repeat part of my Practice of Medicine course and got done all my interviews and it was never mentioned and I did not get lack of interviews at the places I want to go. It is a joke and poeple know it-"practice of medicine" course? Come on seriously that is a joke for us to take-Everything I was supposed to learn the first 2 years in that class but did not because I skipped it or slept through it (it was at like 7am)-I learned in the first week of 3rd year-really a joke. Dont worry ONE bit about it.
