Hello all,

I am planning to pursue a pharmD degree from the US but it is very probable that I will end up living in Australia once I graduate. I understand that degrees from the UK, Ireland and NZ are accepted in australia, but how about the US pharmD. Are there any exams I would have to take and do you guys know about the residency opportunities in australia?

Thank you.

Try contacting APEC (Australian Pharmacy Examining Committee).

My fiancee completed a pharmacy degree in Sydney, but because she was not a permanent resident of Australia, she had to be assessed (i.e. submit evidence of completion of degree etc) before she could begin her registration year (1 year of full time work, or 2,000 hours under supervision).

The same organisation also deals with overseas-trained pharmacists wanting to practice in Australia. My understanding is that you will have to sit a theory exam before being allowed to register in Aus, but I don't have any further details.

Good luck

If you come from North America, you will find that the education system regarding Physicians, Pharmacists, and other health care workers is less intense than what is found in the USA and Canada. I am a medical student from the US living in Australia, my brother goes to a medical school in Chicago, he has lost some hair because of the intense stress of the basic sciences in an American medical school, while I go to the beach on the weekend. Most Australia Pharmacists have a four year Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree which is not recognized in the US. You will have to check with the relevant authorities to find out if you can practice in Australia. The main advantage of Oz is that you can run your own pharmacy unlike the States where the big chains dominate the market, so you could actually earn a much better living assuming your willing to start your own business.

If you want to make a lot of money in Oz, Pharmacy is a much better way to do it than Medicine. So is Dentistry.
