Hey ladies and gents,
Quick question and I'm sorry if this is a dumb one. In highschool I had about 150 hours of dental related community service and -1500 hours of work experience in OMFS and Pediatrics. I'm wondering if any of these hours can be counted on a dental school app?

Thanks a ton

Yes, as long as they can be verified they can be included. That being said, that shouldn't be the extent of your ECs, and hopefully you continued after this through University.

Thanks! And another question regarding shadowing hours, does the shadowed dentist usually just sign a paper or does the school you apply to supply you with one? Or what?

Unfortunately, I believe the AADSAS application only wants experiences obtained during college. You should definitely discuss these things in your personal statement though!

And to answer the other question, just keep a log of your hours. Dentist doesn't have to sign anything, but you may want a letter of recommendation from him/her

If this were true most of us would be in dental school already.

OP, although you can't include them in formal hours within your app, you can write about them in your statements/essays. Make sure adcoms know your history and dedication to the field.

Yes I believe they would count although generally speaking stuff that you did in High School means nothing when applying to grad school (unless its something phenomenal like starting your own company or developing and app, etc.)

Another thing to be aware of is that most schools want the bulk of your shadowing hours to be from a general dentist not a specialist because chances are that is what you will be doing.

Yeah I'm going to get more gpr hours in the next couple years. Also, the chances of you getting into dental school (assuming you're in dschool now) were very slim but it happened. Chances are nothing but a number.

Yeah, I don't mean your chances, I mean that statistically over 50% of graduates become GP's, plus the curriculum in Dental School is designed to educate general dentists. You can go Ortho/OMFS/etc. if you work hard enough.

In terms of during college, would you consider the summer before first year of undergrad "part of college," or would that still be considered "during high school?"

Probably a grey area. I think I counted it. I had a job from high school up until right before college. I put it on AADSAS because I was a high school graduate
