So I want to go to dental school, but I don't know if I will be accepted because my GPA is below 3.0. I got my bachelors last year at one of the University of California and currently I am taking bio/chem prereqs (anatomy, physio, micro, ochem, etc) at local community college. I have been getting A's, but I don't know how my GPA will look at the end when I am done. I have 4 more classes to take so I should be done at the end of this year (currently taking 4 and it is finals week). I am honestly so confused. Should I even bother try taking the DAT? Or should I just go to dental hygiene school and then later on continue to dental school. If I don't get accepted into dental school, it would waste a year. And I know I will be accepted into a dental hygiene program because their requirements are not set as high as dental school.

I would say the biggest issue you might run into is that a lot of schools dont like you taking prereqs at community college. I would check the ones you want to apply to.

Hygiene school can be more competitive than you think, even a great above average applicant can be looked over because they have so many applicants, so be careful to not count your chickens before they hatch! Hygiene into DMD/DDS is not always easy to do either.

As long as you were a non-science major, I think you can explain your reason for taking the pre-reqs at a CC, and it won't be the biggest deal for most schools - a few schools it will be a deal breaker though, so you'll just know not to apply there ... I think Tufts is one of them? If I were you, I would talk to the admissions department of some of the schools you're interested in applying to. Talk to some of the UC schools since they'll be more familiar with some of the classes you've already had on your transcript. The dental schools have no reason to lie to you, and they should give you some honest information
