I had a meeting with an educational advisor at my local chapter of AHEC who was able to help me with health profession advice as well as set up shadowing/volunteering/etc.

The website stated that this organization with a Mission of:

The National Area Health Education Center Organization (NAO) is the national organization that supports and advances the Area Health Education Center (AHEC)/Health Education Training Center (HETC) network in improving the health of individuals and communities by transforming health care through education.

Also they try to help rural/urban health awareness. She works with local medical school as well as allied health education and forensic sciences programs for primary school through college. I would suggest that if possible and if you are having problems geting experience to contact your local chapter. She said there are 46 states with chapters.

For me she was a GREAT resource and maybe your chapter can help you. I was able to get shadowing, volunteer resources as well a mentoring advice.

Their website is: http://www.nationalahec.org
