Pre-Med Baylor vs. TAMU

Hey! So I have been accepted at both TAMU and Baylor. I have leaned toward Biomedical Sciences at TAMU for pre-med, but I am looking at Baylor because they have offered me a slightly better deal. At Baylor, I would do Nutritional Science, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, or Journalism and pre-med, while at TAMU I would do Biomedical Sciences. In your opinion, what is the better pre-med program? Does Baylor or TAMU have a better acceptance rate to good med schools or is it about the same? I am just trying to figure it out. Also, I am scared that the social life at Baylor will be strict and dry, with no real opportunities socially. Thank you for your time.

Both schools will prepare you well for medical school and there’s probably no real difference in the quality of the pre-med courses. Applying to med school from TAMU vs. Baylor will have negligible affect on your admissions, so I would imagine acceptance rates from both schools are about the same. I can really only speak for TAMU, but since we are a tier 1 research university, there’s countless opportunities to get involved in research. There’s also countless opportunities for getting involved in orgs, volunteering, and basically anything you would need to build a solid resume. Baylor probably has these things too, so go where you think you’ll be happiest. One school over the other won’t sway your med school admissions at all. TAMU is probably a whole lot cheaper so it would be the better choice unless you have money at Baylor.

If they are around the same cost, go with the school you feel most excited about / happy at. Biomedical research is probably stronger at TAMU.

If you want to talk about strength of alumni networks, Texas A&M has one of the best there is.

Too bad name/alumni networks won’t get you into med school though.

For what it's worth, I know a lot more people at my school who went to A&M than Baylor people. More so than the enrollment difference should make.

I don’t think that Baylor Med is a part of Baylor Univ.

Anyway, either school for undergrad is fine for a premed. Is one a better deal financially? Will you have to take out loans to go to either undergrad school?

As someone who went to Baylor, it has a very rigorous and preparative pre-med program. My biochem major is still helping me in med school now.

Yup, Baylor is just the best. Until RICE comes up with its medical school, baylor will always be number 1 in my eyes.

Speaking of Rice........why don’t they have a med school? Someone told me that they’re affiliated with one, maybe Baylor? But strange that they don't have their own. They’re in a perfect location...Main St and all those hospitals....

I have no idea.. but they are affiliated with BCOM (burrell osteopathic) in NM.

They, like Baylor univ., have loose associations with BCM I believe. Both have BS/MD connections.

Rice is a quasi-collegiate liberal arts university. They are on the small side and focused on undergraduate education and stronger in the humanities than the sciences (although they won’t hesitate to tell you all about Fullerenes). Baylor COM is essentially the affiliate medical school for Rice. The UT system has many medical education and research institutions in Houston, most prominently UT Public Health, McGovern, and MD Anderson. It would just not be worthwhile at all for Rice to blow millions upon millions on yet another Texas medical school in Houston of all places.
