Any other computer science geeks out there interested in medicine and healthcare?

looking to get computer engineering as my undergrad degree here. hey, if i don't make it in med school, i could always work i.t. somewhere and just hangout with the servers onsite all day... xD

My undergraduate degree is in computer science. My first career was in software development. It was easy money, and the project-based work style alternated between a very light workload and being at work all the freakin time. I only considered medicine after I got tired of computer stuff and had myself a think about what I wanted to do next.

Computers - glad I did it. Glad I'm not doing it now. Come to think of it, that describes a lot of my past experiences.

I didn't fully pursue it as a career before medical school, but I have found it to be a nice creative outlet. Faculty and administrators also like having someone around with those skills.

One of my PIs told me this a couple years ago and, despite his words of wisdom, I came to learn this the hard way. Heed these words:

"Never EVER let yourself be known as 'the computer guy' at work."

That is all.

hehe. one of my classmates was a comp sci major and he's become our class IT guy. I think he actually enjoys it though. and he's awesome at it

It's true. You don't want to be teaching people to make graphs in Excel every other week...

i am! lol ive been programming on my own time since i was 13.. im finally getting around to taking computer science classes in college as a possible minor. Honestly i think it counts as a viable alternative "hobby" especially when people ask you if you play an instrument or sports. Sure i play an instrument and bike casually but neither as hardcore as i program in Django/Python 🙂

Computer science requires you to be ultra logical, and that attitude translates into good performance on the BS and VR portions of the MCAT. I never realized how much logic went into those sections until I started tutoring an ESL student for the MCAT. She consistently bombed both sections despite getting A's in her pre-reqs because her english->formal logic->deduction skills were lacking.

"if A then B" does not imply "if B then A" and similar MCAT distractor fallacies. She literally had no idea what in the hell I was talking about.
