Should pre med undergrads be worried about becoming doctors with the increase in competition for residency spots? Also the new laws allowing IMG’s to practice without a residency in select states?

the way immigration works in this country it’s not like the entire world can just up and move here and become physicians. You’re fine.

People have been saying the sky is falling in medicine for longer than I’ve been alive and the sky hasn’t fallen yet.

Now, if you’re just in it for the money, it’s not worth it. Medicine isn’t the guaranteed path to absurd wealth that it once was (save for certain sub specialties). But even if you go into pediatrics you’ll be compensated very, very well and have no issue getting a job.

I could be totally wrong, but just because they are legally allowing it, doesn't mean that's what's gonna happen. In my head, I would imagine most hospital systems, specifically academic ones, will still require IMGs to participate in US residencies in order to be hired. Pure speculation

Thank you for your reassurance as someone who’s interested in primary care it feels like all you hear no days is doom and gloom. It’s nice to see something positive once in a while.

We've worked with IMGs coming to the US - if you're a native citizen looking to get into medicine, there are no IMG qualifications, laws, or quantity of IMGs that threatens your future practice as a physician.

100k IMGs coming to the US and each being allowed to practice would not affect your admission chances or career chances even 1% more than your personal performance in school, MCAT, clinical hours, etc.

The IMGs are being recruited to work in places that US trained physicians eschew. There is increased competition for residency spots but there has also been increased competition for spots in medical school. Does that worry you?
