Hi everyone, i have a question for you all which i know you can help me out with from experience. Basically I am asking you guys what a pre-med fraternity can do for me on an application. I am asking this because right now i basically have to choose between that or my job. and according to how much this will help me in the future is what it is based off of. Are med schools going to look at me working 30+ hours a week at a consistent job for the past 5 years more of a plus, or are they going to look at me being a member of a pre-med fraternity and all the events and everything we do more of a plus. i simply do not have enough hours in a week to do them both on top of my already packed school schedule and 12 hours of research a week. Thanks again in advance.

I personally would stay with the job. Labeling a society 'pre-med fraternity' not only mouths desparation, but also shows a lack of ingenuity. Remember, you will need $$$ for the application season.

Don't join the pre-med group. Your job helps to show much more maturity than any pre-med group. Again, in my opinion and experience, those groups are a waste. Volunteer and shadow on your own and you should be alright.

What is the job and how necessary is it for you to keep it(i.e. paying bills etc.)?

If its a pre-med fraternity, they should know how busy you actually are and just ask them to cut you a break because your so busy; and help out with the frat's activities when possible.

Frats are overrated and i think unless you have some sort of unique or leadership role it won't stand out to much on your app.

Lol....a premed fraternity...I wonder what that's like.

Them: Fetch me the new NEJM, bitch
You: I wanna read it first
Them: My orgo definitions look better than yours. Pass it now
You: *sigh* <hands it over>

well i work 30+ hours a week because i enjoy doing what i do. Yeah i LOVE making money. but i actually enjoy going to work when im not in school. its something im passionate about. Im sure id gain a lot of traits from going through with this process, but if its not going to help me out that much i dont want to waste my time

I just hope the med schools take that into consideration somewhere, me working 30 hours a week is just that on paper, however if i get an interview and can talk about it, its a lot more than that.

i would never write it off im just asking how would i best be able to include this in my application. I work at a restaurant which happens to be the busiest restaurant in my area. I work the front of the house and the back of the house. Front of the house shows i am very good with customers etc... back of the house.. well when we are on an hour and a half wait on a sat. night and we do 500+ heads. shows i can handle fast work pace, stress, and i can make split second decisions. all good traits for a doctor.

I don't think there's anything a pre-med fraternity can offer you that you can't get on your own with a little effort. Sure they'll organize volunteer events and get in contact with doctors to shadow, but you can do all that on your own. Plus, you'll be able to work it around your schedule instead of some group. I say keep the job.
