Hello Everyone,

I'm currently really having a hard time on deciding whether I want to attend UT in Austin, or Texas A&m. I currently live in Texas, and my intentions are to major in biology, and I"m still not fully decided on whether I want to hopefully become a pediatrician or veterinarian....

I know if I attend one school or another, I will receive a great education, it's just a matter of actually choosing a school that is really stressing me out! 😱

So, if anyone who attends either school can give me their input and perspective on their respective schools, I would tremendously appreciate it! Thank you! 🙂

Please, can anyone provide some insight? I'm really undecided as to what school I will be choosing, and the deadline is pretty close. Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks 🙂

Go to Texas. You will do great from either place, regardless of whether you apply to veterinary school or medical school. But there will be far more opportunities to get involved in research, and for other networking opportunities, in Austin at UT than in College Station. It's a small town. They're both great schools.

Thank you for replying! I appreciate your suggestion, and I'm assuming you're a longhorn or happened to be one? If you don't mind me asking, what were you studying while you were there? And do you have any suggestions regarding what professors or classes you recommend in the college of natural science? I'm sorry for all of the questions, thank you once again! 🙂

As for A&M, does anyone have any input or perspectives? I just want to make an informed and absolute decision regarding where I go, so once again sorry for all the questions. Thanks 🙂

The notion that A&M is in a small town and won't provide you with research opportunities is false. A&M is a huge research institution, and if you're looking for research in a biological science it is probably easier at A&M than in Austin because we have the vet school in College Station. So aside from research going in the biology or biochem departments, there is also separate research going on in the vet school. This research varies from genetics to nutrition to cardiovascular and fluid mechanics.

College Station is small, we only have two real movie theaters for example, but tickets are only like $5. Go for the matinee and it's like $3.50 or something.

Don't base your decision on movie ticket prices, but A&M also has plenty of opportunities to shadow doctors. We have a huge Scott & White clinic, two hospitals (St. Joseph's & The Med), as well as lots of private practice clinics.

Our Office of Professional & Graduate School Advising is also many times better than what Texas has. For example, I just found out today that their office didn't help out former students until recently, and now they charge $20. We help out our own, even if you were out of school for 50 years and came back, they'd still help you out for free. There's also the "Aggie Network," where Aggies help out other Aggies when in need.

To be honest, I don't know that much about Texas. I only visited the campus once on a weekend. But I can still say with much confidence that A&M is a better overall school, and without a doubt is a better value. In fact A&M is among the top 10 schools in the country for value. In a recent poll among fortune 500 companies, A&M ranked #2 as their top choices for employees.

I'm not saying Texas doesn't produce quality graduates, or their education is a bad value, but I am saying that A&M is extremely underrated.

PS: If you go to A&M, join the Corps.

Thank you for your input as well! Wow, I'm basically back at square one, lol. Decisions, decisions.... Well, I guess I have much to think about because I still haven't fully committed to one school

UT Austin. One of the schools that I would have loved to go to if I did not get into my top choice. You'll do great whether you're pre-med, pre-dent, pre-vet -- really, pre-anything. The only caveat about going to such a large school like UT is the majoring in Biology may bring you down... Check out the admission stats for the previous few years at UT and decide for yourself. The match list looks pretty impressive...

UT Pre Med

George Washington
Tulane
UCLA
Harvard
Duke
Georgetown
Washington Univ. at St. Louis
Univ. of California at San Francisco
Temple
Mayo
Albert Einstein
^impressive list

Both UT and A&M send large numbers of students to TX med schools. Graduates from both schools do well. The larger contingent favors UT.
I recommend A&M in your case, since A&M has the only vet school in TX. It also has its own med sch. UT schools are separate and are more established. They rank higher, but A&M is a rapidly rising school.
