HI. I am a high school junior with a GPA 4.0 and ACT score 28 on my first and only try to date. I want to become a doctor. My question is can I aim to get into GA tech or Emory with my stats? I think that my ACT score requires some improvement. When could I take the test again for better improvement? Would I be better off with ED or regular admission?

Honestly there's a ton of knowledge over at college confidential they would be able to tell you in depth the answer to this question.

GA tech has an avg. ACT of 29 while Emory has an avg ACT score of 29-32. You'll be fine with your current ACT score. I suggest doing regular admissions since ED is for highly competitive applicants and your ACT score isn't at that level but that is OK. You'll get in.

-1. you should not expect to get in with an ACT score below the school's 25th percentile (which is a 29 at Emory), and ED is actually easier to get accepted because they know you'll attend and help keep their acceptance % lower (opposed to regular decision when there is a high chance they'll admit you but lose you to another college). Unless you are an under represented minority you should retake and aim for 30+ to feel good about your chances at Emory.

Thanks for the correction about ED. But id say OP has a fighting chance with their GPA no?

GPAs don't help much for college admissions since high schools can be extremely varied in their rigor (a top LA public school in a richer area vs a very rural poor school in the South etc) and even their scoring systems, with some places giving 5.0s for honors or AP/IB and others capping at 4.0. A good GPA is required to show you have a work ethic and do your homework but test scores are what get you accepted. And then at the really top schools a good GPA and 98-99th %ile scores are both required and strong ECs are what get you in.

Great advice above^^, would only add that, as a Junior you still have a lot of opportunities left to take the ACT, so why not take it again an improve that score (after taking practice tests). In general, I feel like the ACT is something that you should almost always take multiple times, heck even my brother retook a 33 to increase 2 points. Unless you think you will do worse, try to retake and improve your score, and in my personal experience lots of practice tests were better than review courses! Best of luck

You can also consider applying to Emory's Oxford college (less stringent admission requirements, something like ACT range 26-28 vs ~30 for general Emory). 2 years at Oxford campus, then 2 years at Emory. Ultimately graduate with a degree from the latter

Go to UGA. It's cheaper and you will be competing with a student body that isn't chock full of gunners. Get a 3.8 in Athens and a decent MCAT score and you'll get into med school.
