pre-meds for obama=)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I can't stand listening to all this crap about how you're going to save the world and money is an evil word. Once you work your *** off for 100+ hrs a week I'd like to see you bitch and moan about saving the world.

It's called incentive. Without incentive aka higher salary I'm not going to be willing to put in an extra 10-20+ hours per week when I can take this time and be more involved with my family. This results in me seeing less patients everyday. If the amount of pay added by seeing an extra 50 patients per week is small enough I'll just go home and see my children instead of staying at work til 7pm. If the incentive is high enough I would be more inclined to work longer.

With either obama or hillary you get socialized medicine. In a way it already is socialized because medicare/medicaid has already greatly reduced competition by setting the rates.

im watching obama rite now. i feel like im at a baptist church with the way hes praising and how the crowd is like "mmmm hmmmm" "yeahhh"" "you know it" "thats what im sayin" "rite rite"

I beg to differ...Few points about super dee duper tuesday:

1.) Nobody has won..the delegates are pretty much tied
2.) Obama pretty much answered the "white people" wont vote for him criticism, by winning states like Idaho, Utah...etc
3.) Obama answered the electibility question. All the states Hillary won were pretty much "Blue States". Barack won pretty much all the "red states". During the GE all those Blue states would vote for Obama easy, but the KEY is that he can bring the Red States in for the DEMS. Obama had more votes on all the southern states than any of the Republicans.
4.) Finally, the next few primaries sets up very well for Obama. For one thing it's one state at a time. Hillary cannot compete with him on a personal basis. He draws crowds of 10000, 15000, 20000. The one state primary also somewhat negates the "clinton Machine", as Obama can concentrate his whole staff in one state. That is how he got the most delegates in IA, Nevada, and SC. Somehow NH got away, but that one we can just give credit to clinton. And finally Money...Obama raised 32 mill compared to 13 for Hillary...he started running ads in post super tuesday states last week...he will be able to match up financially if not get ahead.

So it's looking good for Obama. Moderate to Conservative states go overwhemlingly to Obama, and that is what is coming up...Obama will play down the expectations card, and say he is the main underdog...but I wouldnt be surprised if he comes out here on top. The main issue is going to be those Superdelegates, and I think his electibility advantage plus hated vitriol of Hillary from the right, might just sway their votes. No matter what this thing is coming down to the end. May the best man...err...person win...

Your the perfect desrcription of what Barack would call "The Audacity of Hope".

(its a good book....you should buy it😉)

Like it or not a democrat is more likely to be elected this fall, so your going to have to get used to "socialized medicine". With the majority congress, the healthcare plan will be up in no time...😉

Okay, now I'm convinced you have no idea what you're talking about. This is the most childlike analysis I've ever heard. If you dared to actually read and interpret data, you'd see that Obama won in states where Republicans outweight Democrats by something like 5:1. In other words, he can win Alaska's primary because only Democrats vote, but he has no chance to win it in November because while all 500 Democrats may show up to vote in the primary, the 8,000 Republicans who live there will show up in November as well. Did you even read the results or the numbers? Or did you just see the percentages and run with it? Even Chris Matthews, who's been Hillary's biggest critic throughout this thing, said that Obama's wins in states like Idaho and Utah, etc. don't say anything about the general election because Dems are so outnumbered there.

In a head to head fight, Obama beats Clinton in electability vs McCain.

Secondly, Obama just swept four states this weekend. He is now only 27 or so delegates behind Hillary. He has more of the popular vote, and more pledged delgates. She beats him because she has more superdelegates, possibly the most undemocratic concept in the primaries; these guys are given votes of equal weight of publicly decided delegates by virtue of holding an office.

Our profession is so obsessed with power and money that it really makes me sick. Our first duty is to the patient. With socialized healthcare, we won't have to turn people down.

It would be a dream in four years when I am a licensed physician to have the opportunity and the ability to NEVER turn down a patient based on his/her ability to pay.

That should be the dream for which we strive.
SO DO IT!!!

I mean, who is stopping you from being charitable with your own talents and services? I plan on one day offering free care to those who can't afford it, and volunteering my time and skills on mission trips in parts of the world who don't have access to health care.

No one is stopping you from helping every single person who comes to you for help. If you really don't want to turn anyone away, THEN DON'T!

My biggest fear is definitely the financial impact it will have. I will likely have about $150,000 in debt when all is said and done, and if I were to take a pay cut of 20% (like you suggested), I would be left footing the bill with a pre-tax income of $120,000 per year (down from $150,000). To add insult to injury, not only would I give up 20% of my income in pay cuts, but I would also have to pay the higher income taxes as well for making too much money.

When all is said and done, assuming a 35% overall tax rate after the tax increases that will be necessary (up from 23%), I will have a take-home pay of $78,000 per year. The student loans will cost about $2000 per month to pay off for 10 years ($24,000 annually).

Ultimately what this means is a net take home pay of $54,000 per year. Working 65 hours per week means an hourly take home pay of $16 per hour. In other words, physicians will be among the least paid health care professionals per hour of work. I believe this really is something to worry about.

You want to have some impact with your discussions. Open up blogs on Obama's website.

You pre-meds should go through the medical system first before basing things on your volunteer activity here and there. YOU DON'T GET IT.

OP, that was a very long PR that said nothing about your candidate's proposal on any issue. All it says is that people should vote for him because he's charismatic, young, brown and lived in Indonesia for a few years as a child. Your article was just a feel good article. Whoever you vote for, I hope you base your choice on the the substance of actual proposals, ideas, and experience at least as much as polished show.

This does need to go to the sociopolitical forum.

wow someone is awake! He has no position except feel Good lets all hold hands and hate president bush together....

Look, I am concerned about decreased reimbursement which is happening now under this administration, and if you have never made more than 25K in your life then 150K sounds amazing. It's not. Kids, mortgage, loan payments, vacation, etc makes that go really fast.

Be clear you have to save for your own retirement - SS will not be sufficient or even there by the time you retire. They (dems/repubs) keep stealing, borrowing, reducing SS benefits so don't count on it.

When you start paying taxes and realize that government will just continue to waste money at a rate that is unfathomable you will want to keep more of it.

I don't think a person so far left that has promised to raise taxes (waste our money) will do nothing but continue the inefficiency that is the federal government. No one is going to make a huge difference so keep as much money as you can and take care of you and your family. Your commitment to patients, terrible hours, an working holidays is far more than Hillary or Obama has done for a group of people. so save and fight physician reimbursement cuts...

We do it now, patients that show up in an ER w/o insurance get free care. I am on a ortho rotation and several patients were no insurance = free care because the ortho doc was on call and saw the patient. The ability to pay is not checked in the ER and that patient belongs to the ortho doc and he must follow up regardless of that ability. So doctors provide charitable care right now - this idealized social medicine utopia is such idealistic nonsense...

flaahless, i think i love you man. Here's hoping USC shows me some love and gives me an interview so I can stay in sunny California...

Fine! Don't ask me to take a paycut and donate your pay or time to the poor - people do it everyday.

Oh, I stumbled upon a gold mine here. The OP posting his AP U.S. History term paper here for us to read... Uninformed pre-meds and med students rambling about politics and the like...

*popping popcorn*

Bush/Cheney '08!!!

Whoever started this thread need a reality check.

Obama was never for universal healthcare and now all of a sudden says he is? I don't trust him.

Hillary has the support of doctors and nurses. so she is the #1 person on the healthcare issue.

I support Hillary clinton and she is the best to lead america. Especially on healthcare and the economy.

Obama just copies of people's policies!!!

Hillary Clinton doesn't have the support of most doctors. Nurses may like her, but this is primarily related to association with ANA and various union organizations that support nursing agendas (which are progressively more diametrically opposed to physician agendas).

Hillary Clinton promoted a number of the changes in the early part of the 90s that have lead to medicine being what it is today. This includes the gatekeepr model, the HMOs, the Stark Laws, etc.... A look back at Hillary's voting record isn't comforting as to how medicine under another Clinton presidency would look. Of course, Obama espouses occasional statements about "change" and "hope" and really says nothing, so my left leaning colleagues will have the privelege of picking their poison.
