I'm currently a high school senior and I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight.

I was accepted into UMSL's honors college and their 7 year optometry program with the Opportunity Scholarship, which gives me a full ride and extra money AND opportunities for internships. Except I'm not sure how well their program prepares future optometry students and I'm not sure how strong the science courses will be at UMSL.

At the same time, I'm one of the top 5 on the waitlist at UMKC for their 6 year med program, which I've been considering to go through that route and then specialize on my 7th year for Opthamology. At the same time, it's an incredibly rigorous program and I'm not sure if it's going to be well suited for me. Plus, I didn't receive that much money from them.

On the other hand, if UMSL is not providing strong enough classes for undergrad, I could always go to SLU and Truman where I got a lot of money from them as well.

Please give me your insight! It would be so incredibly helpful!!

1st thought, you must be a genius. good work on that! 👍

2nd thought, If you decide you want to do optometry i would go the UMSL route, free is a very good thing. in all honesty, it doesnt matter where you do undergrad. I would go the cheapest route. UMSL is a good school. If you get a full ride from UMSL through all 7 years i would definitely do that. If not you can pick whatever school you think is best and then pick whatever optometry school you want later.

Pick the career your most interested in, i think you'll do great either way. Good luck in your decisions.

Hahaa thanks optkid! 😀 I don't consider myself a genius...but that made my day! Thanks!! I'll definitely consider what you've said.

I'm just a little concerned about the quality of education at UMSL. Maybe I'm putting too much into the rankings and rumors, but from what I gather, UMKC is more renowned for its medical track than UMSL is. I'm scared that if I go to UMSL, they might not prepare me well for the OAT or optometry school.

Can anyone give me feedback on this?

For future reference, it's "ophthalmology." They'll kill you for that--optometrists, too. 😀
