Hello. I am currently a Junior in high school and I'm greatly interested in the field of optometry as a future career choice, after volunteering at a local optometry office. I was wondering if there are any optometry 6-7 year programs straight out of high school. I read on one website that for a Joint degree at SUNY selected academically talented high school seniors and college freshman are admitted to an approved joint degree track at one of the 27 affiliate colleges and, simultaneously, to candidacy for admission to the professional OD program at SUNY Optometry. I was wondering if there are any additional optometry programs as I researched that this one is rather competitive to get into. Additionally, my GPA is not great at a 3.4 but my weighted GPA is 4.2 ( due to many AP classes). Thank you.

Honestly, you're better off just saving money and spending three years getting your pre-requisites for optometry school and then applying for the 4th year. In the end, that would be 7 years total too. I'm not a fan of joint-degree programs because you'll be limited to one optometry program like SUNY.

The majority of the programs don't require an undergrad degree. Just keep that prereq GPA above a 3.2ish, your OAT score over 300, and you should basically be a shoo-in with your passion and experience this early in life.
