I have a number of questions, but let me start with a brief introduction. I graduated from the University of Florida in 2005 with a B.S. in psych. I entered law school at UF this August, and after coming to the conclusion that I do not want to be a lawyer for the rest of my life, I withdrew.

I am strongly considering a career in pharmacy, but I am hesitant to over commit, especially after law school backfired on me.

I am NOT going to take the attitude of "I WILL become a pharmacist no matter what! They make good money!" I feel this ideology is dangerous. I want to take this a step at a time; however, I want to make sure I am going about things the right way.

First off, I am going to CVS this week and inquiring about how I could become a pharm tech. I am hoping this could give me an idea of what a typical pharmacist does and if I would like doing it. Also, if I do like it, I figure I could get to know a pharmacist for a possible rec letter, etc. Is this a good idea?

Originally, I entered undergrad with the idea of being a doctor, but after realizing chemistry I was hard, I changed majors. I dropped chem I, but got a B+ in the lab. I also got a B+ in Calc I (which i think some pharm schools like UF require). Besides that, I have no pharm pre-reqs. Should I retake the chem lab? How do pharm schools view a W in Chem I way back in 2001 compared to a later grade in Chem I 6 years later?

I am planning to sign up for Chem I and Bio I this summer (3 month summer semester) at an ex-community college that just turned 4-year (Miami-Dade College). I know it's not O-Chem, but will those two classes give me a rough idea of how I will fair and what the work will be like?

To be honest, I am the least concerned about the difficulty. I am ready to apply myself 100%, and if I can't do it now, I could never do it. I survived the first semester of law school, and actually did pretty well grade wise. I find science much more interesting than case law, I just did not have the maturity and work ethic to pursue the science pre-reqs when I started undergrad.

My biggest concern is a pharm school looking down on the pre-reqs due to the college I took them at. Would it matter if I took all the pre-reqs at a less reputable college, or is it mostly the grades that count?

Needless to say, I am very anxious and stressed about my current situation. I am 23 and back at the drawing board so to speak. I know I am still young, but it's hard not knowing what you want to do with your life once you get that college degree. I feel my plan of action would get me started on the pre-pharm track, without over-committing myself, while giving me enough information to decide if I would like pharmacy or not -- hopefully avoiding the delayed doubts that led to me withdrawing from law school.

I would appreciate any thoughts, ideas, advice, etc.

Thank you

Jim

Statistically, we make three career changes in our lives. It sounds to me as if you have made one before you got started. That is ok. At least you realized it before becoming completely bitter.

Becoming a pharm tech is a good idea. Just remember, there is more to pharmacy than retail. Research every possile avenue and see if it is a fit for you.

Personally, I chose pharmacy because it culmunated every thing I liked to do, and was good at.

I go to the university of west florida. for UF pharmacy school you will need 4 semester of chemistry, general chemistry 1 and 2 and organic 1 and 2 as well as 2 semesters of physics. UF does require Cal1 I do believe. 🙂
