I have a BA in something totally NOT related to PT AT ALL - theatre 😱. I have spent the last year taking pre-reqs at a CC (I have taken all there but have Physics 1+2 and Stats to take still) and have a 3.67 GPA at CC. My undergrad GPA was 3.21. My GRE scores were 570V 780Q. I am worried about getting in because of theatre undergrad degree and CC coursework. Is there anyone who has taken most of their pre-reqs at a community college and got accepted/rejected/waitlisted? I just want to know going in what to expect.

I don't think it should be a problem. I haven't gone through the application process yet but there seems to be a good number of people taking most if not all of their pre-reqs at CC. It is just way too good of an option for people that already have their degrees or are transitioning from other jobs.

And your degree should be fine too. From what I've seen schools look at the undergraduate degree as something that interests you. So anything is fine for that.

I have almost identical stats as you, and took most all of my pre-reqs at community college. I graduated from Michigan 10 years ago with a business degree and a 3.3 GPA, then got a 3.9 on my pre-reqs and made it in to my first choice on early admissions. IMO, you have nothing to worry about.

You shouldn't at all have anything to worry about. If anything, you have an up on a lot of other applicants as your background is so different. I had theater people in my class as well as dancers...and it made our class that much more enjoyable as we were all so different. Schools love to get a well rounded class and your stats are good enough in my opinion. Just keep working hard!

Have you done any shadowing/observing/etc yet?

Where did you go for theater??? Just curious (got lots of theater friends in my little circle!)

Thanks for the support and encouragement, guys! I am feeling more optimistic 🙂

Minn--I went to school at Illinois State and am working at a Chicago theatre now....
I have volunteered 57 hours in outpatient peds, 21 inpatient SCI and am now shadowing at a private outpatient practice, but have all of I think 6 hours there so far....but I am getting really excited as I get more one-on-one time with the PT there than I did at either hospital I volunteered at.

I'm in a very similar situation. I graduated this past June from Northwestern with a degree in Communications (studied communication studies and dance). Took only the fake science classes (like anthro and diversity of life) to meet gen ed requirements. I decided early in my senior year to go the PT route after working in a clinic, so I started taking CC classes in the spring. My only pre-req courses at NU are stats, anatomy, and psych classes.

Everyone I've talked to (including Mayo, NU PT, and UIC) all say that it's fine, especially if you do well in the courses at CC. My theory is that chemistry and physics laws and formulas are the same, regardless of where you go.

That's great! Thanks for the info - as I am hoping to get into NU or UIC. Maybe we'll end up in classes together!

IMO, don't sweat it. I know folk who took all their prereqs at a CC and got into highly competitive programs, but they did well in their course work at the CC. Thus far, only one school I have spoken with mentioned that CC coursework might not "cut it," but that was just a "might" not a "no we won't accept it." Just shoot an email to the schools you are applying to, just to make sure. 🙂

I too come from the arts world, it doesn't work against you at all!! I get the impression that many schools like career changers, to help diversify their student population. There are skills you learned in theater that will translate to the PT field.

Good luck!
