Hello, I am registered dental hygienist practicing in canada. I would like to get into dental school now. I have 90+ credits (60 credits from my dental hygiene diploma) and the rest from before i went into the hygiene program. I would like to attend a private university in the US (as it would better my chances of getting in). I have been looking at some universities and they will settle for 90 credits. My science GPA is 3.4 and my overall GPA is 3.5. BUT the problem is that all the coures that I took such as Chem, Bio, Organic/Inorganic Chem, etc are without labs!!!! What can I do now, I don't want to re-take all these courses all over again, it would take me a couple of years to re-do them. I know I should've planned ahead and taken the courses with the lab component, but I never thought I would be wanting to go into dentistry after dental hygiene!!

HELP!!!!!

I'm really not sure if you will have to take the classes over again but I am pretty sure that almost all of the US schools req a "lab component". You many want to contact local undergrad colleges/universities....I know at some of the schools near me they have special intensive prep courses for those that have, say, taken the pre-req science classes a long time ago and need a refresher or are in a situation like yours. I don't think that it's possible for you to only take the lab portion of a class but you never know! Call the schools that you are looking at in the US...certainly they can help you out-you may be surprised, they may have some creative solutions. Good luck!!🙂

i know at my school, you can choose to either take the lecture part OR the lab part.. But thats only during the winter or summer.. but i think u can take the lab part during fall or spring but u have to talk to the registrar office to drop the lecture part, so that ur only left with the lab part..But this requires permission from the head of each department(chem, bio, physics, etc..)

Hope this helps..
