Hi all,

It was brought to my attention by a premed advisor that since many of my pre-requisites were completed at a community college I would probably not be able to apply to many medical schools due to the fact that many schools don't accept sciences courses from a community college - I was wondering if someone can tell me their experiences applying to med school with prequesities from a community college. Thanks

that isnt true.

You should talk to the schools you are considering applying to and ask them direct. your pre med advisor is absolutely incorrect. Some schools, yes most schools, no.

Get a copy of the MSAR. Talk to the schools you plan on applying to.

This is somewhat of a pre-med legend. It goes along with the "Community college classes ruin you chances and make you less competitive" myth.

There are only a few schools that won't take them( and few people can name those schools).

Do a search on SDN for all the thread on this topic.

Your mileage may vary -

I did my undergrad degree at a specialized trade school (where I got my physics) and my premed prereqs at various community colleges (due to cost and schedules). I had one interview and was eventually accepted. Lots of prayer though.....

I took ALL of my science at a CC (with the exception of Chem-I). I have a degree in Business from the University of Colorado, so I had no need for science in undergrad. I have since moved to bufu Montana and the only option around is a CC. I've had interviews at both DO and MD schools and it hasn't been mentioned at all.

But like someone suggested, I would call the schools you are interested in just to make sure they accept CC credit. Good luck! 😀

Lies! Lies! I took most of my science prereqs at a community college and I had NO problem getting interview invites from both MD and DO schools. Further, some of those classes at the community college were even harder than the ones at the university... they have to meet the university's standards for transfer so sometimes they make them extra-challenging to get transfer approval from the universities.

Good luck! :luck:
