Does english AP credit count for medical school english requirements or do you have to take the class at a college/university institution?

I have already taken one english class at uofm, but I have english AP credit from high school, will this suffice for the remainder credit hours that are required?

Depends on the school. Most won't accept it if you got a 3 on the AP exam.
I was told by an admissions counselor to take an upper level English class to have 2

Sounds good. And what's your recommendation regarding genetics? Do most programs (DO and MD) require it?

Were you awarded AP credit on your college transcript? If so, then you're probably in the clear. I used AP English credit + one college English class without any issue.

Re: Genetics, I don't think most programs require it. However, MSUCOM does, and since you're from Michigan (I assume) that might be of particular interest to you. In any case, genetics is an upper division bio class that will look good on your app if you can do well in it!

You have to look at each program specifically but in general most didn't when I applied this cycle.

I assume your transcript doesn't have a letter grade for that AP credit and that you just have the credit. Like, on my transcript it shows up with a "K". If so medical schools will want to see the AP scores (if they accept them) to count it as the credit.

You should contact the school in which you are applying and ask. Or ask a pre-med advisor at your institution if you have one.

This must be school specific, because the school I'm matriculating at didn't ask to see my AP scores (my college transcript awarded credit for them in my first semester with some designation like "CR," similar to your "K" I'm guessing).

For OP, many med schools publish a policy for AP credits on their admissions site. Some schools are more strict about AP science credit (i.e. they may not accept it at all) but most will take your english credits.
