I plan to attend Mississippi State University next spring for Pre-Vet courses. My dilemma is I can't decide on an undergraduate major.. I was thinking of art many times (I'm an artist currently and I really don't want to have to deal with more Mathematics than necessary, but I love science!) But I want my major's courses to line up at least well with my VM School's prerequisites.

Any advice?

Thank you in advance ;-;

Just make sure you can get in to all of your pre-req courses when you want to - I've heard some schools certain majors get preference for certain classes, and if they fill up then it might throw off your schedule. Otherwise, just make sure you take the right classes and major doesn't really matter. Side note: I would have double majored in Studio Art and Biology but I didn't want to take art history classes, so I just kept the first as a minor 🙂

Thank you both very much 🙂 I'll keep it in mind and I think I may stick with Art as my major. I'll just be careful with my scheduling and definitely use some summer time to get pre-reqs out of the way. Because I /really/ love art it's literally the life of me but so is Vet Med. So to do both would be a dream I'd definitely be willing to work towards. Thank you again! ^.^

You may also consider taking up a minor to help you get some of the necessary classes! I chose not to do animal science and instead, I'm a Biology major! I'm entering my senior year and almost all of the biology degree requirements are the same as the vet school pre-requisites.

Just be aware that choosing a major outside the science field when you want to go into vet med will require you to take many more classes and take on heavier course loads. If you're up for the challenge, go for it! Good luck with whatever you choose!

Also consider if your major will be able to land you a job if you don't get into vet school. I did the animal science/pre-vet major, and have been working only part time since graduation in research. It's that or pharm sales in my area.

LOL, this is something I really wish I had realized when I chose the animal science BS path. You really need an advanced degree to do much with it, especially in my state, where the majority of animal science degree positions are in academia or extension. 😛
