Hello all-

I figured it would be better to post this on the dental forum--seeing as how u guys actually got in!--

Im writing my essay- as well as answering questions about my GPA and the fact that its very inconsistent. its in 3.3s range, but inconsistent. like i have As in college, then I have Cs the next yr with scattered A's. Community college to Univ. Houston to Texas A&M.
however, i do have a reason for lack of motivation/lack of being able to maintain grades. I was diagnosed with sciatica (bulging disc in my lower lumbar) which basically disables me from sitting (causes me trouble in class/walking/sleeping etc) and impairs me. physical therapy for it for about 4 months, then some homeopathy and then yoga. didnt help, if anything it might have made it worse. its been about 1 yr and a half with this problem and now im finally opting for a non invasive procedure--if that doesnt work-- surgery this summer. would this be something valid to explain to dental schools for the inconsistencies or would this be counted against me in that dentists often have to be agile seeing as how they sit in various positions etc?

Thank u all for reading/replying.

I think it would be a valid topic to bring up in relation to your grades. Sciatica is extremely painful; I think anyone could understand how that would interfere with your grades.

Is the surgery usually successful? In dental school you sit through 35-40 hours of class every week --- not the 12 hours/week you do in undergrad. Most dentistry is performed while sitting and most dentists eventually complain of neck and back pain. Is practicing dentistry going to be something that will reaggravate your condition after the surgery? Hope everything works out for you. 🙂

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. As legitimate as your fluctuating grades are, the adcoms will most definitely ask about how you're going to deal with your sciatia during dental school and your profession (provided you get in and make it through).
