Hey Party People - if "oligio" means "deficiency," then wouldn't "oligiodendrocytes" mean a lack of those type of brain cells? That would be unfortunate. Anyone know? Just wondering.

A direct translation of oligodendrocyte means "(oligo-) few (dendro-) tree (cyte) cell", which would refer (I'm assuming) to their structure and shape (dendrites), rather than their prevalence.

yes "oligio" is actually oligo- so that would help with getting the right definition. and oligo- actually means few, not deficiency. so as quix put, oligodendrocyte = few tree cells as in they have few projections. oligosaccharide means a few sugars and is different from a pentasaccharide or a polysaccharide.

you're right, i do feel smart.
