Pregnancy and Residency interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I had the same question awhile back, both with regards to away rotations and interviews, as I'm nearly 22 weeks pregnant. Everyone I have talked to about this has assured me it won't be an issue. My mentor was pregnant during her Ob/Gyn interviews and (anecdotally) I know of several residents who have been in the same position without any problems. Besides, if there was a particularly malignant program that harassed residents for having families, would you really want to be there?

Good luck! Would love to hear other opinions from people who have BTDT.

Hey there! Congrats on the pregnancy. I had a 1 month old when I was interviewing last year. In theory it shouldn't matter. Just make sure that you show how excited you are to start residency and mention your baby plans in the interviw IF they ask. I always mentioned that my hubby is staying home with our daughter when I start. They all seemed to take note of that.

I hope this helps 😳) I actually didn't MATCH last year and am trying again this year. I thought that maybe programs didn't like that I had a kid- but I think that I just got lost in the system last year. My dean's office still doesn't know why I didn't match. (oh well- more time with my daughter).

Good luck and maybe I'll see you on interviews 😳) If you have any questions about juggling a baby and school- ask away.

wowww i'm glad im not alone in this!!! i am 22wks pregnant and at first everybody i asked said it shouldnt be a problem....that is until i spoke to our residency program director who told me the political thing to say is that it wont be a problem but in reality it can...he said they way to avoid it being a problem depends on how you present yourself. IF they bring it up its important to dicuss the support at home that you will have so that you will be able to concentrate on residency. they want to know that you will not be "distracted" while in the hospital!!

I hate to rain on everyone's parade but it really will affect your chances plus interviewing and being on the go predisposes you to preterm labor. I unfortunately had this problem fortunately the outcome was good but if it wasn't for my medical school letting me finish rotations on line and from the bedside I would have lost my pregnancy.

I now have 4 kids 1 prior to med school 2 in residency intern and third years and our last will be while an attending. So I have a lot of experience in what the truth really is...

I can say this if you're not showing DO NOT mention being pregnant. While you may think that OB/GYN residency programs should be supportive this is NOT always the case. Why? While you are out everyone has to make up for a lost man that pulls a q 3 or q 4 call or if on a night float system weekend rotation has now 3 instead of 2 weekend calls. The result people not in your situation can become bitter and resentful. As residency is hard enough without needing more call. The people without kids really can not empahzise with staying up nursing or dealing with a sick kid. The toil is worse for the intern or second year or residency. Third or fourth years are better as you move in chiefdom and finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck feel free to PM me
