Hey fellow resident applicants,

Is anyone having any luck with prelim programs? I am still stuck at one interview and I'm freaking out. Anyone have more than 4 or 5 prelim interviews at this time?

I am wondering if it would be wise to apply to a backup specialty such as IM just in case. Is it too late to apply now? Can I apply categorical IM to those programs where I have applied for a prelim spot?

You could just rank the prelim spots and try to stay on for more than one year. You may just apply to more prelim spots.

Are you an AMG? Can you get a prelim invite at your home program?

Have you considered applying to more programs? I would. Many IM prelim programs have later deadlines (late November or in December). Obviously interviews are handed out first come first serve, so the soon the better.

Yes I'm an AMG. I received some more interviews, one I'm waiting for dates to open up. I also went ahead and applied to some more programs. How many do you think is a safe number-10? Or should I do 15?

Total or additional? I would say since you're not raking them in at this point, the more the merrier.

I've said this a million times. Applying for residency is essentially free when compared to the lost opportunity cost of not matching. What's an extra $300 when the alternative is not being employed next year?

Also, I 2nd, 3rd and 4th the notion of talking directly with the prelim program at your own institution.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by talking directly with the prelim program at our own institution? I have briefly met with the director but I have yet to receive an interview!! I do know of a number of classmates who interviewed for prelim at my own school who did not end up matching. I was under the impression that it's almost guaranteed to at least match at your own institution. Am I wrong? This conflicting info kind of scares me.

That's pretty much it. Just say, "hey...I'd really like to do my prelim here, I got an interview for the advanced program here and would love to stay...hook a brotha up."
