Since I'm done with my Neuro apps, I'm now trying to get out my ERAS for prelim medicine. However, I'm wondering how do the medicine programs know that we are applying for a prelim position, instead of the regular internal medicine position? I looked on FRIEDA and was able to find a list of programs offering prelim positions, but I'm not quite sure how you identify yourself as seeking just a prelim medicine spot when you list the program on ERAS. Can someone help me out with this question? Thanks!

hey there!you dont have to go to freida for the list of prelim programs.go to eras, click on the 'programs' link, search programs by entering IM and location.it will display the list of programs in that location.next click on the program of your choice.it will display the details of the program including the types of tracks(prelim, categorical, primary care, etc).you can click on more then one track(prelim+categorical),and continue with the process(request usmle transcript for that program, assign lor writers, etc).hope this helps.

Hey, along these same lines (intern year), how many prelim programs are you all applying to? One at all the places you applied for neuro? Also, when is the recommended time to get in the ERAS stuff, assuming your CAS was in by the target date?

hey there!no i have not applied to prelim programs at the same place for a simple reason-i dont bel my 'credentials'(!) are stellar and almost all the neuro programs are university based.if i had applied to them i would be competing with rads and derma applicants and am not sure if i would stand a chance.now this s the reason i have applied to the commuity programs.but i guess it would be your call!as far as sending in the eras stuff,i already have.i was told the earlier the better!hope this helps.gl!

from my past experience, i would suggest trying to do your prelim year at the same place you match at for neuro. if you apply to the prelim program, you may find out that many of the programs have a deal worked out with the medicine dept, though it is not officially listed that way, or they have some "pull" with the medicine dept.

also, you get to know the medicine interns from your year, and get to know the system so it may be a good idea to do your prelim year at the same place.
on the down side, though, it may be an easier year if you do it in a community program. but I think a strong medicine background can only help you later on.

as for med programs knowing you are applying for prelim positions, you select prelim programs in eras. they are listed as such. also, when i applied, my personal statement was my neuro statement with a short bit at the top saying i was applying for neuro and a prelim medicine spot.

hope this helps.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I was finally able to figure out which prelim programs to apply to. I'm wondering though, if you get an interview at a Neuro program, can you call up the medicine program and try to get an interview in the medicine department at the same time? Or, does everything happen separately between neuro and medicine?

Good luck to everyone!

it happens separately, but if you call up and ask, they may be accomodating. it never hurts to ask. also remember to be nice on the phone.

Does anyone have a list of programs that assure you a PGY1 position? Also, a list of those that require it and those that discourage it would be good.

The SFMatch does. 🙂 If you use the code they sent with your labels, you can get into their directory and just scroll down the page looking at the bottom right hand corner of the grid for each program. It says either 1+3 (integrated) or 1/3 (intern year not included). Some have other numbers, because some med/neuro and psych/neuro programs are in the directory as well.

Also, a list of those that require it and those that discourage it would be good.

Not sure what you mean by that? Do you mean which programs require you to do an intern year at their institution, and which discourage completing PGY-1 with them?

If that's what you mean, those that require are those that are integrated. And I for one can't imagine a program that would discourage you from interning with them - prelim med and neuro may be totally separate, no help from the neuro dept securing a position, but that's still not because they "discourage" it.

AHA, so the different codes do mean something. Great info, thanks!
