I will be applying to Transitional Years and Prelim Medicine spots.

It seems many programs have both of these.

Questons:

1. Is it ok to apply/interview for both of these at the same program?

2. Would I have to go to 2 separate interviews or would the program interview me for both in the same day?

3. Finally, I found the listings for Transitional Years, but can't seem to find Prelim Medicine information on FREIDA. Anyone know where to look?

4. Do these require two different Personal Statements?

Thanks.

May I assume from your user name that you are also applying for CA-2 in Anesthesia and therefore, your PGY1 could be either Transitional or Prelim IM?

It is ok to apply for both at the same program, but I would be careful, as one might imagine that their preferred or usual candidate comes from different arenas. That is, not many programs use TY as a first year other than Derm and some other specialties. They may prefer that Anesth or other subspecialties apply through the Prelim IM. As you probably know, the make up of the years is fairly different. That all being said, since you are using either track as a well recognized stepping stone to another field, it shouldn't make a difference. Perhaps I'm missing something...if you can check on what fields the grads of these years go into, that might give you a clue as to which track you would be most successful in.

Program by program decision.

You're right...FREIDA doesn't separate out the Medicine (or Surgery) spots into Prelim and Categorical. You obviously can find out this information from the programs themselves as I'm not sure there exists a separate listing for these positions outside of ERAS/NRMP.

Well you might want to gear your TY statement to reflect wanting a more extensive exposure to things like OB-Gyn, ED, etc. rather than the mostly IM stuff in Prelim IM. But since your plan is assumedly to go into Anesth (or another field), the general tone of the PS will be the same.

Thanks Kim. Great info. I am going into anesthesia. From what I've gathered TY and Prelim Medicine are equally good choices for PGY1 if you don't match into a linked program (PGY1-PGY4). That is why I am wondering if a program would look down on you for applying to both their TY and Prelim Medicine year. I'll probably give it a shot and see what happens. I just hope they schedule both interviews on the same day as this would be a pain in the ass to use up 2-3 interviews days at one program.

I'm doing anesthesia and I applied to both TY and Prelim medicine years. I matched with a program's TY having interviewed for their prelim year as well.....so it couldn't have mattered that much. I also did not have a separate PS for my TY or prelim med applications and had no problem getting interviews.

Did you have the TY and Prelim Medicine interviews on the same day at the same school?
