Hey y'all,

Would it be prudent to mention in my thank you cards that I've secured a prelim position outside of the match to my advanced pmr programs? Would this cause me to be ranked higher at all?

Thanks and good luck to those still on the trail. I finally finished my last one a few weeks back and it's such a relief!

I don't think that it would hurt you. I have been told by advanced programs that having been done with an internship is a plus. Part of that is because it shows that I am a capable resident and can handle autonomy (a huge reason why great applicants don't become great residents) and also because not everyone matches to internship.

I think that most PDs are willing to assume that the candidates who match to their program will also match to prelim...but it certainly doesn't hurt.

So, I secured a prelim IM position outside of the match fairly early in my interview season and I began to bring it up in my interviews thinking that perhaps it would look good to said interviewers. Almost every single interviewer expressed disbelief about the possibility of getting a spot outside of the match or were almost convinced that the program that I'll be doing next year was not ACGME certified. I can't really say if it hurt or not but I definitely wouldn't say that it helped.
