For those of you applying for prelims and/or transitional yr programs, do we need to write a separate personal statement for those programs? Will the statements for our field of choice suffice?

Most would suggest rewording your PS. You don't have to pretend that you like IM, just change the "i'd love to be an ophthalmologist at your program" to "I know that a solid foundation in internal medicine will help my career in xxx"

I've actually heard an even split on this. All the prelim programs know you are bound for something else, so it isn't that critical that you craft an essay about how important their program is to you. They know it isn't, and that it's just something you feel like you need to endure for a year. So it can sound a bit forced if you write an IM specific statement.
