There have been various threads discussing similar topics, but I couldn't find anyone addressing my exact concern.

Say you're applying to a categorical gas program and want to rank their advanced track as well. Would it be a bad idea to apply to prelim/TY years at that same institution? Is there any way that come interview day the PD of your categorical/advanced track is going to see you and think you're applying to another specialty? Or is that a common thing to apply advanced and prelim year at the same institution?

Thanks and excuse my paranoia 🙂

I definitely don't know 100%, but I would think that it's perfectly acceptable (and probably the norm) to apply to both an advanced and prelim at the same place.
