So what's the difference between Preliminary and transitional internships? 😕
 
Prelim years are in one specialty only (medicine or surgery) and typically have limited elective time. Sometimes these are also audition rotations to get into the actual program.

Transitional years are more like 3/4th year of medical school with some required rotations and then elective time to do what you want.
