Is it possible to do a preliminary year in pediatrics (as you would in internal medicine)? Or, do programs typically only choose candidates that will be there for 3 years?
If so, are there any programs in Cali?

Yes it is possible to do a prelim in Peds. I think it's harder to find, however. You may have to contact programs specifically to find out if they are willing to take a prelim. We have one at our program and I'm pretty sure that person talked with the program director to make it happen.

Hopefully others will have more specific details about the Cali programs.

Did you check the listings? FRIEDA lists all the residency positions and one of the bits of info offered in the program details is whether or not they offer a prelim position. Others may know an easier/faster way to get at this info. http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/

There are available prelim peds years. Here is a list of the programs from last year, per the NRMP and how many spots filled. This does not include special arranged prelim years by talking with program directors.

UCSF - 1
U of Louisville - 3 (none filled in 2008)
Johns Hopkins - 2 (1 filled)
Mass General - 2 (1 filled)
Children's Mercy in KC - 2 (1 filled)
NYU - 1 (unfilled)
SUNY Brooklyn - 3
U of Rochester -1 (unfilled)
UNC - 1
Cincinnati Children's - 1
Oklahoma at OK City - 1
Oklahoma at Tulsa - 1
Geisinger PA - 2 (unfilled)
St Christopher's in PA - 2 (unfilled)
UT San Antonio - 1 (unfilled)
U of Washington - 1
Med College of Wisconsin - 2 (1 filled)

These do NOT include peds prelim programs specifically designated for child neuro (i.e. 2 prelim years). The only one in cali through the match is UCSF

Part of this depends on why you are doing a peds prelim year. If you are prelim-ing for anesthesia or radiology, i have heard from many people that doing only peds prelim puts you at a disadvantage because of your lack of adult medicine knowledge. Just an FYI 🙂

The fact that only 12 people did a peds prelim year last year is probably because it's probably not as useful for the specialties that require a prelim year. I wouldn't do it unless you have a really good reason for it. Now I'm curious.

thought it may be easier to match into peds in cali than prelim or TY in cali... I am interested in anesthesia (perhaps peds anesthesia), and need to do a prelim year...
