Hey guys...

I have been semi offered a position in FP which I had applied to close to home as a back up. Can I do it for 1yr and then leave after a year to do PGy2 for anesthesia. I know it is a sad thing to do but ..........

I am an IMG and will this yr of FP be included as a prelim year.
I have applied to 55 programs in Gas but only rejections so far.

Please do give me your views!!!
Cheers. 😕

This is a situation with no easy advice to be given.
First, one can't advice to get into a program and cheat.
Second, a lot depends on the requirements made with an offer. If you have to decide within few days - it's a catch 22 and you can decide only yourself. If the time frame is more loose - you can still wait for those more desirable, while showing your constant interest in a program, which offered you a spot.
Third. It's always better to be inside the system, than outside - the perspective is absolutely different. Nobody can jail in the program somebody who feels unhappy.
For AMGs the first year in any specialty counts (except psychiatry, maybe), but this is not always the same for IMGs - some programs specify that at their websites. BUT. Everybody knows people, who started at the other categorical programs, than finished. I know one, who started with categorical IM and finished anesthesiology, the other started categorical IM, after 2 years switched to OB/GYN. So it's not impossible. Even if you have to finish the other residency and then go to your desired one - it's worth it( if you think about USCE, LORs and all the paperwork), WHEN YOU ARE YOUNG. And you are 🙂
