Hello, first of all I tried to search this topic and had no luck.

I am currently a Prelim 1 in general surgery. I have 233 and 227 for my step 1 and 2. All first attempts. Never failed a class. No red flags. Currently doing well as a new intern. Im went to an American medical school.

I have asked several ppl whether i should take step 3 or not before applying this year. Everyone tells me something different...right now I only have time for 2 things. Should I focus on SCORE/Absite (which my PD favors), research, or try to take step 3 in September???

I am afraid to spread myself too thin and not accomplish anything well. Is studying for step 3 doable in 6 weeks with 80hr work weeks? I am just trying to figure out how to better my chances for this application cycle.

I never had the impression that anyone cares about Step III, but I could be wrong.
What did you apply for last year? What would you say prevented you from matching? I mean numbers wise you should have matched somewhere. Candid assessment of your application might help you direct your efforts.

Agree with others above. Step III shouldn't take you much time and all anyone cares about is whether you pass.

Your focus should be on maximizing your chances for a categorical position next year. A good ABSITE score, connections (from faculty and obtained through research) and robust LORs will be your allies.

Step 3 shouldn't take more than a week of studying to do well.

The ABSITE is VERY important. You likely won't be able to publish or present much research if you're a busy intern trying to stand out.

I would definitely work on getting strong LORs from influential attendings if at all possible.
