I've heard that preliminary medicine positions are hard to come by because we're competing against ophtho, ENT and other competitive specialties that require a prelim med year. Does anyone have any insight/opinion into this? Are there any prelim medicine programs that are relatively easy to get into, both on the east coast and west coast?

probably true, getting a guaranteed year from the neuro program you match is the easiest way. Getting a spot isn't hard in the end for most, but the more laid back transitional years and community prelim programs can be tough to get. transitional years probably aren't accepted by all neuro programs and have to be carefully constructed to meet neuro board requirements.
