Prematch with failed Step 2 CS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received a prematch offer a from a very reputable program in NYC and this program is where I actually wanted to go. However, just after that I found out that I failed Step 2 CS. I have very good step 1 and 2CK scores. They gave me a month to think about their offer. I am not sure what is the best way in my situation. Should I take the prematch? But if I do and I withdraw myself from the match and this program finds out, they may revoke their offer and I'll end up with nothing at all. I believe there are good programs that would be willing to give me an offer even with my failing a CS (conditionally on my second attempt passing it of course). I just think so because they know me well and they understand that my failing is a fluke and they mentioned many times that they would like to see me in their program. What is the best way in my situation?
Does anybody know if passing the CS is required to start internship at all? Somebody told me that I have time to the end of internship year to pass the CS.

You are probably required to pass both Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS to graduate medical school, and I am pretty sure that all state require passing Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS for licensure, . . . you have until the end of internship year, sometimes March, to pass Step 3 for alot of programs, . . . A prematch offer, and I am sure this is in the contract, is that you need to have passed Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK i.e. be eligible for a "resident's license" in NY, look it up on the webpage, some states won't license you at all if you have failed Step 2 CS, possibly unfair, but while this may be a fluke it is sad that this is now a black mark against you, but is not insurmountable, . . . I would accept the prematch and schedule Step 2 CS STAT, i.e. the next available dates are in March or April, and if it takes 4-6 weeks to get the results then you are pushing your luck if you wait any longer . . . i.e. if you are schedule for Step 2 CS in June, well then, it don't matter if you pass or not because you need to pass Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK for LICENSURE as a resident physician . . . Step 2 CS was invented to keep out foreign grads from practicing in the US who basically can't communicate with patients in English or anyone with bad personal skills, people who blow off studying get caught in the net. . . if you retake Step 2 CS before submitting info for licensure in NY i.e. are ready to start in July then your prematched program won't care . . .

Also, the "prematch" is a contract, and the program usually won't "revoke" it if you failed Step 2 CS, unless this is written in there somehow, but usually it just states that you agree to start residency in July . . . if you don't pass Step 2 CS then you can not start residency in the US . . . I would accept the prematch and you could tell them too about the Step 2 CS and 99% chance will let you retake it . . . failing Step 2 CS doesn't look great, so I would go with this offer, especially if it is the program that you want . . . however if you are considering going through the match then maybe you don't want this program?

Know that some medical schools just require you to sit for the CS exam and DO NOT require you to pass it. You do need it to be lisenced.

Thank you,

No this is actually program that would be my No 1 or No 2 choice. The reason I wanted to go through the match is that I know for sure that other good progrms would be willing to accept me with my faling CS. . . (they told me that). Other than failing CS I have impressive step 1 and CK scores and a very good GPA. So, I guess I am not such a bad candidate even with this problem. That is why I thiought it is less risk for me to go through the match than to take the prematch, --> withdraw myself from the match and have my fate in the hands of one program administrator.

Hold the phone on your plans about matching. . .

If you are an FMG you need have passed Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK or you will automatically dropped from the match, so you have to take Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK by December 2007 (at the latest) to have passing results in time for match (I assume you are an FMG because only these people can prematch, lucky you). Ergo, for this cycle you either prematch and make sure you pass Step 2 CS for licensure or you don't start residency, you will be automatically withdrawn from the match. Your best bet is to talk to the place you prematched at and explain . . .

Have you read this information on some website or it this an assumption?

Thanks

I have heard from IMGs interviewing that they needed to get their Steps completed before Match . . . I don't know the specifics
