Hey, quick question. I am a U of T downtown student and I fooled around too much in my first and second year. In my third year my GPA was a 3.8 but even then there is no way for me to bring it high enough to be accepted to a medschool in Canada (I didn't show up to exams for a lot of courses in my first year and second year and my GPA for first 2 years is aweful, less than 1.0 infact). I'm thinking about transferring to Ryerson or York. I want to get transfer credits for my third year courses but the universities say that my Ryerson or York transcripts will not show my third year marks. It will only say "credit earned" and that I'll have to mail the medical schools my U of T transcripts. So my question is, will my marks from U of T affect my acceptance decision. And also, if I do get transfer credits, how will medical schools in Canada, US and Caribbeans calculate my GPA? Also, would medical schools frown upon applicants who take 5th or 6th year? Would they pay attention to courses that I didn't get transfter credits for? Any information would be appreciated.

Realistically, most (if not all) of the US med schools require that you have at least a C-/+ for the pre-req course to be considered a "pass." Therefore, if any of your first year and second year med pre-req courses fall below this C limit (and a 1.0 gpa would be below that), then all those courses need to be retaken before your app is even given consideration. In Canada, having applied in the pass, I am aware that passing marks for most universities is a D (>50%), however even then it would be advisable to retake anything <C grade and score A's.

Unfortunately, your U of T marks will be considered as a negative factor without a validating reason. I'm not so sure if schools "frown" about a 5th year, etc. I know U of Ottawa will calculate you weighted GPA using the three most recent years, i.e. if you completed Year1,2,3,4,5,6, then your GPA will be calculated as: [(Year 6 GPA x 3) + (Year 5 GPA x 2) + (Year 4 x 1)]/6 = wGPA --> This could have changed since I last looked at it. Still, pre-reqs must be successfully completed for most US/CAN schools. Although your upward trend is a positive factor to your app.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers,

A.

There is full disclosure required for med schools in Canada and your GPA follows you forever. There was schools that look at last 2 years and best 2 years, so just do well in your last year and kill the MCAT.
