Hello everybody,

Like many sophomores, I will have been done with organic chemistry and physics by the end of my sophomore year. This means I will have completed the requirements for the MCAT. I should begin medical school in the fall of 2016 and I would like to be prepared to apply EDP at a certain school. Would the community generally recommend that I take the MCAT during August of 2014 right after my sophomore year while the material from organic chem and physics are still fresh, or take the new 2015 MCAT in January during the beginning of the 2nd semester of my junior year, following biochem and other upper division couses? I know these aren't necessary but many agree that they can be helpful. One thing I find to be beneficial about taking it early is that I can take ample and study during the summer and have about a year of retake time before I even apply. My concern is that a year old score for an outdated test may not be accepted everywhere or anywhere I will be applying. On this note, I will be contacting the admissions departments of some of these schools to see whether or not they know if they will take outdated scores, but I'm not sure they will have decided yet. Of course, decisions can be made a year from now, when I would take the early test. Right now I'm leaning toward the early option, seeing as I have ideal study time, every course I will need and primarily because the test is still the tried and true one, but, again that is in a year. Having some upper levels and Christmas break to study for the 2015 MCAT is appealing as well. What do y'all think?

Thanks!

no brainer...take it in 2014. Its valid through the 2017 entering class

Thanks! 2-3 years is the standard, but given the change in the exam, I wasn't sure. Anyone else have ideas?

Can you not also take the Old MCAT up until January 2015?

It depends on when you are ready and when you want to begin school. If you are ready before Jan of 2015, then take the old one.

I'll be pushing the limit to take the old one and will have basically one shot at it. Current plan is to finish up pre-reqs Summer of 2014, then study for the MCAT all Fall. The way I understand it, is that they will offer the Old MCAT up until September of 2014, and then January 2015, and that's it. I don't feel like I could be ready to take it in September, so January is my only shot.

I should have asked; when will you be a junior?

I'm very much a non-traditional. I already have a bachelors in nursing and am just going back for the core pre-reqs.

Schedule is as follows:

Fall '13: Chem 2, Physics 2
Spring '14: Orgo 1, Bio 1
Sum '14: Orgo 2, Bio 2, BioChem
Fall '14: Study for MCAT
January '15: take OLD MCAT (Like I said, I think this is the last time they are going to offer it)
Spring '15: Human Anatomy, Micro -or- Genetics
June '15: Apply
Fall '16: Matriculate

That's the plan anyways. I work full time as a nurse as well.

I assume instead of spring and summer '13, you mean spring and summer '14?
Orgo 2, Bio 2, and Biochem all over one summer term while working full-time sounds intense. That's more classes than you're going to take that spring term over a shorter period.

Yea, that was a typo. And yea, I know it's going to be a ****ty summer, but I really don't see any other way to facilitate it all. I supposed I could move BioChem to Fall '14 and take it concurrently while studying for the MCAT. But, I really wanted time to do nothing but study for the MCAT.

You might just have to take the 2015 MCAT. I know a nurse who is in med school and she loves it. Good luck!
