Preparing early: residency

Hi all,

I am a student who will be starting medical school in the fall. I will be going to school on the east coast but I eventually want to return to the west coast (specifically San diego if possible) for residency. I wanted to get an early indication of the most important things I can do to get these competitive residency spots. I also assume CA residency spots are more competitive than most others. Any input is appreciated.

Pretty much the same as you would do for any competitive position...do well on Step 1, get pubs, make personal connections for strong letters etc etc.
