From what I've gathered around the boards, I find that this is the best way to prepare for pharmacy school....

Party! Travel! Explore! Meet new people! It's your last official summer of nothing! You're in already! You'll learn the stuff when time comes! =)

If you're really nervous, I would say go pick up a pharm tech certification book and learn it. 🙂

Agreed! Take the summer off and get plenty of R & R.

That being said, make sure you're prepared to shift into high gear on day one of pharmacy school. The material comes at you hard and fast (especially if you're in an 'accelerated' program), and it's easy to fall behind if you don't stay on top of things.

You can also get a fun, almost unstressful part-time job to help offset the high usc tuition! 🙂

I really hope nobody answers something like.. buy this book and brush up on this subject and memorize these drugs cuz I'm probably not going to do it. If anything, it would only make me feel bad 🙁 like I'm falling behind because I'm not going to be doing those things!!! Weeeeeell....... I'll probably feel bad for just a second.. then I'll go back to relaxing and getting my tan on at the beach!!

definitely don't worry about it till you get there. take the time to relax b/c you won't have much of it once classes start.

I'm glad pharmchick asked this - I've been meaning to as well. Over the past two weeks, I've come across THREE adults who said, "OH, USC pharmacy school??? Thats GREAT... but ya know what, you better buckle down from the start - I know my (insert: nephew/neighbor/grandchild) who just.. (sigh)... ya know.."

😱 Just WHAT?!?!? What are these people scurring me about? And, of course, my dad happens to always be there so then he harasses me like a hemorrhoid up my you know what.... :scared:

And then I go and talk to the current pharmacy students at USC and what do they say, "oooh DONT WORRY.. no competition, we all work together, help each other out.. you're supposed to have fun!!!"

I just want a realistic outlook please - Was there ever a moment in your first year that you said "man i wish i didnt bum around summer.. I should've _____"

I would get a part time job in the pharmacy - get a little spending money, learn about some drugs, make some pharmacist friends. But I have a hard time sitting at the beach, I get bored and burnt. 😎

Yeah don't even worry too much. I'm just going to travel abit. I just got back from Toronto! Toronto sucks by the way. Got my Tahiti and Vancouver trip planned too. The only educational thing I've been doing is picked up books to read for fun. I just wanted to get my brain ticking again and to get my reading speed and comprehension up to par. But please do be reading no pharm book...just read for fun!!!! Enjoy your summer!!!!

Hmmm...I feel like I should break out my biochem and mammalian physiology book to refresh my memory. Or I can just party it up and get intoxicated every night until school starts.

I think I asked the same thing before I started pharmacy school. It's true that you really should take it easy this summer and not worry too much about school. Get lots of relaxing in and be fresh and ready to start on day 1. Actually, things at our school didn't really hit full speed until week 2, but week 1 was no cake walk.

I can't think of a single thing that could actually help you prepare for pharmacy school. I mean, I guess if you are particularly weak in any one subject area you could brush up on it a little. I don't think its necessary though because they will teach you what you need to know once you've started classes.

Haha this thread is funny, it took me a minute to realize it was started last year. Baxter don't bust out your phys. book, trust me. The first semester is like 90% review anyway as far as the physiology and bio sciences goes, with just a little more detail, so it'll come back easy. Just don't even do school stuff. Have as much fun as possible. But when you do get your drug list this summer to start memorizing I recommend starting right away but only do it like 10-20 minutes a day.... that's like nothing and you will basically have it all down before school starts, then you wont have to be studying it with all your other classes.

TrojanAnteater, When do we get the drug list? Do they send it to you, or is it something you get at the bookstore?

They will send it to you in the mail around the beginning of August. It will have info on drugs 1-200. There will be a quiz on the first 100 sometime in October. The categories you have to memorize are Brand Name, Generic Name, Classification, Common Indications used for, and Dosage range. The quiz is 25% of one of the classes. If you start early, the quiz will actually be quite easy.
