I am currently a BS microbiology major at USF. I am trying to put together a "to do" list to make applying to med school as smooth as possible. USF is obviously my top pick, however I will apply to others as well. My gpa took a serious hit during this fall and spring, due to a high risk pregnancy...(never do school and pregnancy again)..lesson learned. I am needing to bring up my GPA. Any suggestions on shadowing, what's a good amount of volunteer hours? Personal statements? anyone know specifically about the Tampa area?

[That's good. When do you plan to apply?]

USF is obviously my top pick, however I will apply to others as well.

[20 schools or more is a good number to apply to. Because of the economy, the competition is getting stiffer.]

My gpa took a serious hit during this fall and spring, due to a high risk pregnancy...(never do school and pregnancy again)..lesson learned.

[Make sure to briefly mention that in your personal statement as a reason for your low GPA]

I am needing to bring up my GPA.

[Medical schools look at the trend, so make sure your grades go up from this point.]

Any suggestions on shadowing, what's a good amount of volunteer hours? Personal statements? anyone know specifically about the Tampa area?

[Yes, seek out physicians medical students and shadow them. There is no "good amount" of volunteer hours. Make sure you volunteer in a field that you are interested in, that you can speak passionately about, and that demonstrates your interested and ability to help others and be compassionate. As far as personal statements, try to read some sample ones from friends who have gone to medical school, from online personal statements, and then figure out the typical outline and start drafting yours. If you have a lot of time, you can start a word document, free write about your life from birth to now, and you might find common themes and experiences. Things to always include in the personal statement include why medicine, any clinical/research experience, any reason for bad grades/challenging situations, etc.]

Good luck!!

We'd like to help you, however, can you clarify your situation? How are your grades and how extensive is your GPA drop? When do you plan on applying and have you started taking pre-requisite courses or started shadowing physicians yet?

For your situation, I think most medical schools will consider the fact that you had a high risk pregnancy, however, I will not apply this year due to your dropping fall and spring GPA. I'd give it an extra year or two to demonstrate a rising GPA trend and to gain additional clinical experiences. Have you started shadowing or writing your personal statement yet? How's your MCAT score?
