  1. Pre-Medical
Hi Everyone!

I completed the pre-med required classes 15 years ago. GPA was 2.9 Have been in the non-science/biology field after undergrad.

Should I redo my pre-med classes again (for a grade)? It seems like I'll need it because I barely can solve the basic science questions on the MCAT.

Thanks!🙂

You probably should...it will also help in bringing up that cGPA...get A's.

I think we need a little more detail on your situation.

It depends on what you are doing now. I assume you have been working a job in a non-science field (I guess you ment non-science/non-biology?) and have not taken any classes at all in the past 15 years?

I would suggest starting from the beginning. You will need to have current (in the past 1-2 years) upper division sciences and even if you are allowed to enroll in classes like cell biology, o-chem, biochem, genetics with 15 year old pre-reqs, it would definately be to your benefit to ease into school again starting with intro courses again. Plus it will help you to do better on the MCAT. Most schools wont admit it, but usually an older student needs to have stats better than average for acceptance. It has to do with how many years you will be able to devote back to medicine after residency.

I agree with all of this. OP, you should retake your prereqs and aim for a 3.7+ postbac GPA.

Not only is what you said in the first sentence untrue, but your conclusion in the second sentence doesn't even logically follow. 😕

Older students need to have the same stats to be competitive for med school that trads need to have. In other words, you don't have to perform better than trads academically, but you do have to be on par. If anything, nontrads at my school tend to have GPAs that are significantly *lower* than our average. That's because we have multiple people who, like the OP, have a low GPA from college. They do well during a couple of years of postbac, but it's not enough to bring their total GPA up to our average. However, if their app is otherwise strong, we will take the more recent high postbac grades into account.

I agree, 15 years is a long time even if you were in a science field. I have trouble remembering things I learned 2 months ago. Take your prereqs, work hard, get A's, rock the MCAT.

Good Luck
