This may not be an appropriate place to ask, but I'm curious. I went to the pharmacy to have a prescription filled for my husband who had a molar extraction and bone graft done at the oral surgeon. I understand that the responses on this thread are not necessarily reliable, but I'm not treating anyone at the time and I hope to learn these things in dental school. 😉
Anyhow, he was prescribed Lortab. Every time I hear a drug name, I look up the chemical/physical information on it....it's a hobby of mine. Personally, I have an adverse reaction to Codeine (tightening of the chest, sweating.) Lortab (hydrocodone) is a deriv. of Codeine. Would it be likely that reactions to the 2 drugs would also be similar? I know of quite a few people with Codeine allergies and it seems that hydrocodone is commonly prescribed for more invasive dental procedures. I'm sure there are alternatives, but for curiosity, does anyone know if hydrocodone would cause a similar adverse reactions as one may experience with codeine since they are closely related?

It could if it's a true allergy. The only way to find out for sure would be taking some & seeing what happens, but I wouldn't recommend it without an epi-pen, some Benadryl, and a scalpel on hand to cric yourself with. 😛

Exactly as stated above. If I have a Codiene allergic patient (rash/hives/etc) and I'm doing something where I think the patient might need a narcotic pain reliver, I'll Rx a drug called Darvocet (propoxyphene HCL) which has similiar strength as the codiene derrivative narcotic drugs without the codiene.
