Can anyone send some advice on presenting a paper at ARVO? I have presented posters in the past at ARVO, but for the first time my abstract was accepted as a paper. From what I can tell its a 15 min powerpoint during a 2 hr session with a bunch of experts from the field. Can anyone send any advice on preparation? Tips to do well? Things to avoid?

I presented a basic science project during residency. I am assuming you are a med student that just matched?

The best and most obvious thing I can tell you is to be uber prepared. Know what you are presenting inside and out and back again. Know everything remotely related to what you are presenting. I got peppered with questions and had people question things. You have to be ready to back up your stuff.

Yes it is 10-15 min only and is a powerpoint. Have your PI go over the presentation very well and ask them what questions or issues to expect and what to read up on.

You know folks at ARVO wear shorts and sandels. I would wear dress like you did for interviews, better to be over dressed for something like this

I never had seen anyone getting killed personally but have heard urban legends of it. Just be super prepared and know your stuff.

It was a great experience by the way

Thank you for the response. Yes I am (sadly) still a medical student and I did just match, but I'm thrilled to be presenting a paper at ARVO. I've been told only very original research gets presented as a paper so I will definitely prepare well in advance and keep in eye out for various political enemies and haters.

I am presenting a poster. Could you give me an idea if what to expect?

I will also be presenting for the first time. Any tips would be nice. Dress code?

For posters, you will only be required to stand at your poster and take questions for certain periods of time. Though I wouldn't dress interview style, as for a paper presentation, I would try and look presentable (e.g., slacks, button-down, possibly tie, no jacket). You still want to know your project very well, as there are even more opportunities for questions at posters than papers due to the time frame involved. ARVO is a blast. Leave time to enjoy yourself!
